The day had turned bleak and windy. Or was it just the narrow city street, sandwiched in between the tall buildings, blocking out the sun and forming a natural tunnel that accentuated any air movement? Whatever, Jade shivered as she hurried along, sighing her gratitude when turning the corner brought back the sunshine and no breeze at all.

The takeaway sandwich place she found a couple of doors along was empty. And why not? she thought tartly. It was no longer lunchtime!

With a salad sandwich, a low-fat chocolate milk drink and an apple in a paper bag, she strode quickly across the pedestrian crossing and into the quay area where there was no shortage of people dashing for trains and ferries. Finding a spare seat in one of the harbourside parks, she devoured her sandwich and drink, refusing even to think about Kyle Armstrong. Much nicer to watch the ferries chugging into and away from the piers, or the other craft that was cruising the blue water of the harbour.

Her craving for food temporarily satisfied, Jade wandered down towards Bennelong Point and the Opera House. Synonymous with Sydney, it was a building you couldn’t help but admire, but Jade decided she could well do without the myriad steps one had to mount to reach the front doors and foyer.

Having explained at Reception who she wanted to see, she was allowed to slip into the back of the theatre without any trouble. Rehearsal was in progress, with Lenore on stage. Jade sat down in the back row of seats and was soon absorbed in the play which was funny in both a witty and farcical way.

Jade loved the theatre, and went often, though she had always avoided Nathan’s plays, after seeing one a few years back. It had been an emotive drama about family relationships, hitting too close to the bone for her taste. Jade wanted to be entertained when she went to the theatre, not put through an emotional wringer.

Her mind and eyes back on Lenore, she found herself admiring the woman’s acting ability. She was quite brilliant and exquisitely beautiful as well. Jade envied her willowy elegance and that glorious red hair which was so vibrant under the spotlights. She could well understand Nathan not wanting a divorce from so desirable and lovely a woman.

When the group on stage abruptly broke off and Lenore moved down some side-steps and started walking down one of the aisles towards her, Jade was surprised. She was in shadow at the back of the theatre and would have thought Lenore couldn’t possibly see her from the stage. Jade had been prepared to wait for a natural break in the rehearsal before letting her presence be known. All she could think was perhaps the lady who’d let her in had somehow got a message to Lenore.

Jade was about to stand and meet Lenore halfway when a dark figure did exactly that from a row of seats on the other side of the aisle. It was a man, Jade quickly realised, a tall well-built man with dark hair and wearing a dark suit.
